The AoC and Eteach move FE recruitment into the 21st century (FE Now)

Recruitment is expensive and time consuming for FE colleges. Historically offline media has been the medium of choice but as Internet usage grows, more and more candidates are using the Internet to search for their next post.

A joint initiative between the Association of Colleges and Eteach UK Limited has created a unique online recruitment service tailored specifically for Further Education professionals –

Eteach UK Ltd has been developing online recruitment services within the primary and secondary education recruitment market for six years, the service is now used by more than half of the LEAs in England and Wales and has over 200,000 members, Eteach has been working with prominent FE associations and colleges for more than a year to develop a flexible and cost effective recruitment service for the FE sector.

Kath Barnes, Head of Personnel, Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College says: 'We have increasingly found attracting quality candidates a challenge. Recruitment advertising is costly and the administration involved in processing applications is lengthy. Whilst historically, we have used offline publications to advertise our vacancies, we are now embracing the Internet as a medium to reach candidates.

We were asked to work with Eteach in developing, to ensure that this new recruitment system was tried and tested by the people who would be using it in the future. With our input and that of other FE colleges, we have helped to influence the shape and scope of this service to create a function that will cater specifically for FE college needs and refine the recruitment process. Not only does ensure college vacancies are widely promoted but it ensures jobseekers can easily find suitable roles with enhanced search functions and email job bulletins.

Financially, has the potential to save us thousands on advertising and hours of administration. Being able to just email our job advertisement in and have the suitable candidate application forms emailed back to us, on our own college application forms, will transform our recruitment process.'

For jobseekers, is a free, searchable database of Further Education jobs nationwide. Once registered, candidates can sit back and let the job find them – as suitable posts are emailed to them. With more and more colleges set to sign up, could create the ultimate source of FE vacancies – removing the need for candidates to look elsewhere for potential posts and saving them the time and stress of searching various websites and media.

For colleges recruiting, the process has been made as simple as possible. Vacancy details are simply emailed in and then suitable candidates are emailed back. There is the option to simply add vacancies as and when needed, or to take out a year’s subscription for unlimited vacancy advertising.

Vacancies are advertised online through a searchable database on and are linked to a host of other relevant websites including, which has over 20,000 links with websites worldwide, the AOC and other FE union websites.

Offline, vacancies appear in The Independent Newspaper’s Education Supplement and in vacancy bulletins sent to all AoC member colleges.
