Regent College Leicester
Regent College is a dynamic 6th Form College in the heart of central Leicester, situated within the main learning quarter and set alongside Leicester University. Regent is focused on helping each individual to achieve highly and progress to achieve their personal ambitions. We offer a wide range of A levels, GCSEs and vocational courses. We provide daytime and evening courses, as well as courses for the business sector. We work with a growing range of partner organisations to provide learning opportunities for all sections of the communities we serve
Regent College Students have this year achieved the college’s best ever A’ Level results, with a pass rate up by 2% to 97%. Impressively most A level subjects, covering 22 different courses, now have 100% pass rates compared to the 19 courses recording the same achievement in 2008.
It is particularly pleasing that more than a quarter of all A’ level entries were awarded an A or B grade, representing a 3% rise, and this is testament to the impressive attitudes and hard work of students completing their courses this year.
Ofsted inspectors visited the college earlier this year and judged teaching and learning, as well as the overall quality of provision at the college to be good. The results achieved this year reflect and support these judgements, but most importantly they reflect the hard efforts and determination of students throughout the year, and are thoroughly deserved.
As a small VI Form College we are proud of the personalised support and attention that we are able to offer to all of our students and they have responded brilliantly to the high expectation that staff have of them.
In addition, increasing numbers of students are opting for courses with a particular career focus and those following an Advanced level BTEC National Programme this year recorded a pass rate of 100%, of which 40% were awarded the highest grade of Distinction. These young people have put themselves in the strongest possible position at a time of recession and not only do they have A level equivalent qualifications, but they have combined this with skills and experience relevant to their future careers. BTEC courses followed by students cover areas such as ‘Law and Legal Work’, Health and Social Care, ICT, Business, Music and Performing Arts.
This year the college also offered students the opportunity to study for, and produce the new ‘Extended Project’ qualification in addition to their A level studies. These enable students to develop their higher level research skills and evidence these skills to potential Universities and employers.
53 students took part in an Advanced Level Extended Project programme and 91% achieved a pass, with 17% of these achieving a new A* grade, which will be introduced for all A levels next year.
These projects, increasingly popular with Universities, enable students to bring together the range of skills being developed across their A level courses and to show that they can apply these to real problems and contexts, through university style research.
These excellent pass rates and the proportion of higher grades, combined with a ‘value added’ rating last year that placed the college at around the top 10% of all colleges nationally are results that students and staff of Regent College can be rightly very proud.
