Support the future of your industry

What is Taking Teaching Further?

Are you a business or industry professional, with a minimum of two years' experience in your area of expertise, looking for a way to support the future of your industry?

Taking Teaching Further (TTF) is a national initiative funded by the Department for Education (DfE) to attract and support experienced business and industry professionals to teach in the Further Education (FE) and Training sector.

TTF funds colleges for the cost of training and ensures reduced classroom time in the first year of teaching, so you can focus on your development as a teaching professional.

As part of the programme, you could teach one of the 15 technical routes. TTF is also available to those who have business experience and want to teach the core skills that underpin good technical education – either English, maths or SEND.

*You must not already be working in a training/assessing/teaching post within the organisation applying for the grants nor have worked in a previous organisation in a training/assessing/teaching post. You may have worked in a previous role which included some level of training/assessing/teaching.

Teaching in FE is flexible and varied

A job to suit your lifestyle

Working in FE can provide greater flexibility, with teaching roles available on both a full-time and part-time basis. For example, someone who is nearing retirement and is reducing hours in their usual role might like to spend some time training the next generation on a part-time basis. Part-time teaching allows you to work alongside your current job and change lives without changing your career. Equally, someone may be looking for a full-time role, and one in which they can use their industry knowledge through teaching rather than in ways more typical to their chosen profession.

Download our guide to TTF for industry professionals for more information on requirements and subjects covered by the funding.

What would the transition from industry to Further Education look like?

Support and training for a smooth transition

As a teacher, you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation. You'll have the opportunity to impart your first-hand business and industry experience to your students and develop their knowledge and talent.

As part of TTF, you will receive a significant amount of additional support in your first year of teaching to assist you with the transition from your profession to the classroom. This includes having the opportunity to shadow other teachers and receive mentoring. You will also have a reduced timetable for the first year, allowing you time to complete your teaching qualification.

If teaching is something you are interested in getting involved in, you can search and apply for vacancies in your region and area of expertise via this website. You can also check your local Further Education college’s website for vacancies.
