Tutorial Learning Mentor

Department: Foundation Learning

Hourly Rate: £14.22 to £16.42 per hour

Contract Type: Variable Hours

Reference: REC2288 | Closing Date: Sunday, 26th October 2025

Variable Hours

This role is offered on a Variable Hours contract for services, giving you the flexibility to choose whether to accept work offered to you. We’ll provide an approximate number of hours you may be asked to work, however there is no obligation for work to be offered, and there’s no obligation for you to accept the work offered.

The Opportunity

You will support a caseload of our learners who face significant barriers to learning. You will work with students who experience a range of challenges, including attendance issues and external pressures, ensuring they are supported to access College services and know how to make use of external resources when required. Your role will be central to helping our learners engage with their education and feel supported throughout their time at college.

You will work closely with subject teachers, parents, guardians, and external agencies to identify learners who may be at risk of underachievement or disengagement. Through one-to-one mentoring and small group work, you will listen to learners, develop strategies to overcome barriers, and encourage solutions-focused approaches to learning. You will also help our learners understand their own progress, set achievable targets, and build confidence and self-esteem.

In addition to supporting our learners directly, you will liaise with multi-agency teams to ensure our students receive the support they need to succeed. You will contribute to the wider college community by participating in departmental and cross-college activities, such as training sessions, open days, and recruitment events, and provide relevant information to staff to help support learners’ educational journeys.

You will play an active role in transitions, supporting learners moving from school to college or progressing from year to year, and offer guidance on academic choices and progression pathways. By offering pastoral care, facilitating peer support activities, and making appropriate referrals to support services, you will help learners overcome obstacles and access the opportunities they need to achieve their potential.

About You

You are empathetic, patient, and highly approachable, with a genuine commitment to supporting our learners that may be facing barriers to education. You will have at least two years’ experience of working with young people and a proven track record in teaching, delivering tutorials, or providing pastoral care in an educational setting. You will understand the challenges our learners may face, including attendance issues, social or emotional barriers, and external pressures, and be confident in helping them navigate these.

You will be able to engage effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including teachers, parents, guardians, and external agencies, to ensure learners receive the right support. You will have strong communication and interpersonal skills and be able to offer pastoral guidance, encourage positive behaviours, and monitor progress in a structured, solutions-focused way.

You will work independently and as part of a team, developing strategies and small group activities to help learners build confidence, resilience, and engagement. You are organised, proactive, and calm under pressure, with a commitment to promoting inclusivity so that all learners can overcome obstacles and achieve success both academically and personally.
