Newham College London, now merged with NewVIc Sixth Form College, is the largest post-16 education provider in Newham. With campuses in East Ham, Stratford, Plaistow, and the London City Institute of Technology (LCIoT) in Canning Town, we serve over 11,000 students across a range of pathways – including 16–18 study, adult education, apprenticeships, and higher education.

The Role.
The Personal Development Tutor will deliver tailored, impactful support that prepares students for future learning, employment and independent living. The role includes delivering timetabled CORE sessions covering British values, safeguarding, welfare, careers education, mental and physical health, citizenship, financial literacy and online safety.
The postholder will work closely with internal teams and external agencies to deliver high‑quality workshops, provide targeted support for students facing barriers to learning, and ensure timely interventions are in place to support attendance, behaviour and progression.
There is x4 vacancies, these are offered on full time, permanent and term time only basis.
Key responsibilities.
- Work closely with Personal Development Co‑ordinators to support students at risk of falling behind attendance expectations and ensure timely interventions.
- Collaborate with Course Tutors to support sessions and arrange meetings with students and/or parents regarding attendance and behaviour.
- Hold regular 1‑1s with students, particularly those with risk indicators, to agree actions and targets that support retention and achievement.
- Organise and deliver the CORE programme and related workshops.
- Ensure students’ pastoral needs are met and make appropriate referrals to internal support teams and external agencies.
- Support vulnerable students, including looked‑after children, care leavers, young carers and students with SEND, and participate in PEP meetings and Annual Reviews.
- Contribute to the organisation of student welcome week and ensure students understand expectations and available support services.
- Advise and support students with university applications, including UCAS personal statements.
- Work with Personal Development Co‑ordinators to develop CORE resources and organise workshops.
- Provide information, advice and guidance to applicants and arrange keep‑warm sessions to support transition.
- Encourage students to participate in enrichment opportunities, including the Honours Programme.
- Support exam invigilation when required.
- Carry out administrative and organisational tasks related to the role.
- Attend parents’ evenings, induction, interviews, open days and other college events.
- Contribute to the Self‑Assessment Report (SAR) and Quality Improvement Plan (QIP).
Our Ideal candidate should have the following qualifications, skills and experience.
- GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4 or above.
- Strong understanding of supporting vulnerable students to overcome barriers.
- Experience delivering individual and group sessions.
- Experience organising and delivering engaging presentations.
- Experience developing effective working relationships and partnerships.
- Experience representing an organisation in an outward‑facing role.
- Experience producing promotional or information materials.
- Experience maintaining databases and producing reports.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Positive, enthusiastic and proactive approach.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
