Queen Mary’s College is the local sixth-form college for Basingstoke; it employs over 200 people and has just over 2,000 students. It operates several income-generating facilities across its vibrant 25-acre campus, including a leisure centre, theatre, main hall, and ancillary facility lettings. QM Leisure Ltd and the Commercial Operations department are responsible for these parts of the College and for facilitating hires and events for external individuals and groups from the local community.
JOB PURPOSE
To assist with the delivery of services and to provide keyholder duties within the College’s income-generating areas, in accordance with the College’s mission and values. Including compliance with related laws and good practice.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dependable Duty Officers who strive to deliver excellent customer service. You need to be confident and ready to get stuck into everything from serving at our bars to locking up the venues late at night.
The ideal applicant for this role is someone wishing to experience a senior role in order to enhance their CV and professional skills. By rota, the QM Leisure Duty Officers will work in one of the following capacities; Front Of House, Bar Supervisor, Box Office Sales, Lone Worker and Key Holder. A flexible and mature outlook to working in public entertainments is required by all candidates.
Essential Criteria
- An interest in the entertainment and hospitality sector
- Excellent communication skills
- Aged 18+
- The ability to work independently and use initiative
- You should be willing and available to work evenings and weekends
- The ability to pay attention to detail
- Good administration skills
- Computer literate and experienced using a POS or leisure management system
Desirable Criteria
- Ideally you should have experience in bar, retail or hospitality work
- Strong organisational skills
- Good people management skills

Bar Supervisor
- To serve customers with beverages and confectionery before, during the interval and after all performances in either the Central Studio or Queen Mary’s Hall bars
- To cover the bar for the full duration of the performance
- To prepare interval drinks as and when required
- To maintain the cleanliness of the bar and foyer area throughout the performance
- To thoroughly clean the bar foyer area and dispose of bottles at the close of business
- To restock the drinks coolers as and when necessary
- To advise the Commercial Operations Manager and Licensee of any stock deficiencies
- To carry out cleaning of bar equipment as and when required
- To carry out any other duty as may reasonably be requested by the Commercial Operations Manager
- To cash up the tills at the end of the night and lock all takings in the safe
Front of House and Box Office Assistant
- To ensure a high level of customer service during performances
- To liaise with the performers and technicians to ensure that all shows are performed in a healthy and safe environment, ensure they start on time and run as smoothly as possible
- To act upon, or refer to the Commercial Operations Manager, any comments or issues raised by customers
- To assist in ensuring that building security is maintained in all Front of House and Back Stage areas throughout the show, within procedures detailed in Central Studio’s operational guidelines
- To assist with the complete evacuation of the public spaces of Central Studio or QM Hall should the necessity arise
- To cash up the tills at the end of the night and lock all takings in the safe
Lone Worker and Key Holder
- To ensure the College’s buildings are secure at all times, and locked and alarmed at the end of events, in line with the operating procedures.
- Maintain a healthy and safe working environment
- A high degree of efficiency and accuracy in dealing with enquiries
- Provide solutions to hirer’s requests, even at the last minute, which can often be the case with large events.
- Ensure cleanliness of facilities when changeovers occur throughout the day.
- Porterage and movement of furniture as needed by hirers.
- In the event of reactive issues, such as but not limited to broken windows or leaking pipes summon and manage contractors whilst on site if the issue cannot be resolved by the job holder.
- Ensuring the college is left ready for business the next working day. For example, returning any furniture or items to classrooms.
- In the event of any issues, provide handover notes for the morning Caretaker who can then address and complete any outstanding tasks.
- Feedback on any relevant information to Commercial Operations Manager to be used to improve future service.
- To carry out any other duty as may reasonably be requested by the Commercial Operations Manager, deputies, or hirers.
