Overview

Redmaids' High Junior School

At Redmaids' High Junior School, we provide an outstanding all-round education for girls aged seven to eleven. The school provides all of our girls with a busy, vibrant, happy school where they can positively flourish.

We have high expectations and want our girls to succeed. We meet the individual needs of each child and expertly guide them to achieve their full academic potential.

We also encourage our girls to join in. Whether it’s playing chess, football or hockey, taking part in a concert or book group, joining the art or fencing clubs, our girls have full, active days.

In terms of pastoral care, we are exceptional. We treat every girl as an individual, which means they leave us with high self-esteem and self-confidence, ready to take full advantage of everything Redmaids’ High Senior School has to offer.

So whether it’s through sport, music, drama or academic pursuits, we want every girl to find the things they enjoy. This creates a school, in an award-winning building, that’s just bursting with purpose and positive energy. We treasure that energy – it really is quite wonderful. We hope you think so too.

About us

A brief history

Redmaids' High School is the oldest surviving girls’ school in the country. Since its foundation in 1634 by John Whitson, Lord Mayor and MP for Bristol, the school has been dedicated to creating opportunities for girls and young women.

Whitson’s will stipulates that The Red Maids’ Hospital would be created for 40 poor women and children and that they would be ‘apparelled in red’ – a cloth that he himself manufactured. His importance to the school is celebrated each year on Founders' Commemoration Day when the school processes through the streets of Bristol to a service at Bristol Cathedral.

The school has grown from the original 40 to over 600 students, across the Junior and Senior Schools, but still benefits from Whitson’s legacy, allowing us to provide scholarships and bursaries (in the Senior School) to girls from a wide range of backgrounds and income brackets.

Today Redmaids' High School is a centre of excellence in girls' education - one of the leading independent schools in Bristol and the UK.
