The Role
This key post as a permanent, full time Assistant Headteacher is available from 1 September 2025, subject to satisfactory clearances and references.
There is flexibility in terms of the leadership experience and strengths that the successful applicant will bring. We are seeking to appoint an inspirational leader with a proven track record in securing exceptional standards, experiences, and outcomes for students. The immediate portfolio for the successful applicant will be Behaviour, Attitudes, and Culture. This is a new portfolio within our School Leadership Team and the successful applicant will work closely with the Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral, Inclusion, and Ethos).
We are looking for a skilled leader and teacher who can make a positive, immediate, and sustained impact on our students, staff, and parents/carers. In return we can offer exceptional professional development and growth, fantastic students and staff, and the opportunity to work in a truly diverse, vibrant, and dynamic community positioned to have a transformational impact on the lives of our young people and their families. For professional development purposes and to meet the needs of the school we support school leaders in managing a variety of portfolios over time. The role will provide plenty of opportunities for personal development and responsibility and will be an ideal step towards deputy headship.
We can accommodate most subject specialisms. We would appreciate a willingness to be flexible initially regarding what subject you will be teaching.
The School
At SMRT we believe that each member of our school community is created by God and our aim is to achieve our full potential (being fully alive). All we do is rooted in this hope of who we are as people and who we can become. We are particularly inspired by Jesus’ statement ‘I have come that you might have life and life in all its fullness’ (John 10 v10) and Irenaeus’ ‘the glory of God is a human being fully alive’. This is an exciting time to join SMRT as work with renewed focus and energy to fulfil our core purpose enabling our students “to develop the skills, knowledge and Alive qualities so that all our students can make their unique contribution to the world”.
SMRT is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and so safeguarding checks will be undertaken as part of the recruitment and selection process. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the successful applicant will be expected to undertake an enhanced Criminal Disclosure. We welcome applicants regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or religion. It is an offence to apply for this role if the applicant is barred from engaging in regulated activity relevant to children. You can find a copy of our Safeguarding Policy on our website.
St Mary Redcliffe and Temple (SMRT) is a successful and heavily oversubscribed 11-18 co-educational, Church of England, comprehensive school of over 1750 students, serving families from the whole of greater Bristol and beyond. We are located at the heart of the city and have a diverse student community with considerable parental support. Our diversity is a strength and something we celebrate.
