To provide strong leadership for managers and staff, and to appraise, motivate and assess the development needs of those reporting to him/her

To manage designated areas of the curriculum and associated activities, including curriculum development, cross-college liaison/ co-ordination where necessary, to meet College targets and the objectives of the College’s strategic plans and policies.

The balance of the duties of the post may vary depending on the curriculum areas covered, and some duties will not apply in all areas.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (related to the curriculum area covered)

Quality/ course administration

  • To contribute to the formulation of the annual Faculty Development Plan and its implementation, including cross college liaison/ co-ordination where necessary, and to draw up a development plan for the Head’s curriculum area. To remain up to date with the priorities of the Government’s changing priorities in ESOL to inform portfolio development.
  • To develop a range of provision, within the annual cycle of curriculum planning and curriculum resource planning, to which young people and adults will be attracted and which is exciting, developmental and which will provide them with progression paths to further study or to work.
  • To monitor and maintain the accuracy of the course portfolio.
  • To contribute to the preparation of the College annual self assessment report, delivery reviews, and course quality improvement plans (QIPs) and to ensure the quality of course documentation in line with the quality assurance cycle.
  • To manage the delivery of designated areas of the College course portfolio and associated strategies for employers, employed and unemployed adults and young people as required, in consultation with other managers as necessary, to achieve College targets for recruitment, retention, achievement and progression.
  • To ensure scheme approval and course validation is kept up to date.
  • To ensure course internal verification arrangements meet awarding body requirements where necessary.
  • To monitor the implementation of external verifier recommendations in a timely manner and to a consistent standard where necessary.
  • To deal with complaints from members of the public and students in line with College procedures.
  • To be responsible for the arrangements for off-site activities where applicable.
  • To develop external partnerships and to liaise as necessary with employers, HE, Contractors, Schools etc
  • To keep up to date with the requirements of employers and /or other external agencies to develop the curriculum offer to meet their needs.

Staffing and Resources

  • To implement effective systems of communication with staff to ensure the effective operation of the curriculum area.
  • To manage and conduct Performance Development Reviews
  • To develop and apply strategies to promote high quality teaching and learning and to optimise teaching performance.
  • To monitor the achievement of essential and professionally desirable staff qualifications in this area of work.
  • To manage timetabling of staff in liaison with Course/ Curriculum Managers including temporary cover arrangements.
  • To identify staffing needs, to manage staff contracts (including temporary staff) and to recruit and appoint staff, including the setting up of interview panels, and to induct new staff and manage their probation.
  • To ensure that staff are being managed effectively.
  • To implement College Conduct, Capability and Absence Management procedures where required.
  • To manage designated budgets, including the budget for temporary staff, in line with college procedures; to implement budgetary controls where required.
  • To work with the Director of Finance on the planning of curriculum specialist resources and equipment, to oversee their procurement and to manage and monitor such resources.
  • To monitor routines and returns and develop routines and targets for teams to ensure the efficient delivery of services and the achievement of targets and deadlines.

Students

  • To monitor achievement of targets and implement improvement strategies in terms of student recruitment, retention and achievement, and ‘at-risk’ students.
  • To support the marketing and publicity of the course offer to ensure that recruitment and admissions of students meet College targets.
  • To maintain appropriate statistical data and student monitoring documentation, and to ensure these are available for inspection as required.
  • To manage student disciplinary procedures.
  • To co-ordinate the ILP report for the curriculum area.
  • Centre Management (where applicable)
  • To deputise as necessary for the Faculty Director in the role of Head of Centre.
