Queen Mary’s College operates several income generating facilities across its vibrant 25-acre campus, including a leisure centre, theatre and facility lettings. Whilst the college’s primary goal remains its educational objectives there is an opportunity to increase the income and strengthen its reputation from making available its facilities and activities to the wider community. QM Sports Centre is a fully commercial facility open to students and the wider community. It comprises a fully equipped fitness suite, 23 metre 4 lane swimming pool, 630sqm sports hall built to specialist standards for basketball and netball with 4 badminton courts. This is accompanied by a 3G pitch and an all-weather pitch, football and rugby pitches and a gymnasium available principally for aerobics, dance, martial arts classes, and room hire.
Purpose of Job:
To assist with the delivery of services in the fitness suite and other Sports Centre facilities, providing an outstanding customer experience to all members, students and visitors.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
The ideal applicant for this role is someone who is looking to gain further experience of working in the leisure industry and has previous experience of working in a fitness suite or teaching exercise classes. The successful candidates will work as a Fitness Instructor in the Sports Centre, carrying out inductions, fitness classes, assessments, cleaning, giving advice/writing programmes and ensuring the general health and safety of facility users. The successful candidate will also cover other roles across the centre, including lifeguarding public swimming sessions and covering the centre’s reception desk. The candidate must be available to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends.
Essential Criteria
• A formal qualification in health and fitness equivalent to Level 2 Fitness Instructor, such as Premier Fitness Instructor Certificate, Lifetime, YMCA, ACSM Instructors Certificate or NVQ Level 2 equivalent.
• Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
• The ability to use own initiative
• Good attention to detail
Desirable Criteria
• Experience of working in a customer-related environment and minimum 2 years fitness instruction or coaching experience would be beneficial
• Customer service and point of sale experience
• Computer literate and willingness to learn to operate a leisure management system
• NPLQ Lifeguard certificate would be an advantage but training will be provided
JOB DESCRIPTION
Main Responsibilities
• To supervise the day-to-day operation of the fitness suite when on duty in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for customers at all times
• To carry out day-to-day reception duties, ensuring the reception desk offers a helpful and welcoming service to all users; whilst maintaining tight access control
• To provide outstanding customer service and experience
• To ensure all health and safety procedures and policies are being observed at all times
• To carry out inductions and personal exercise programmes for customers and students
• To design and instruct exercise classes
• To instruct and/or coach activity/sporting sessions as and when required
• To advise customers on how to best use equipment and carry out exercises
• To develop and run new schemes and initiatives within the gym to aid membership retention
• To carry out cleaning duties as required
• To process membership sales and enquiries
• To assist in clerical and administration duties as and when necessary
• To act as a qualified Lifeguard to supervise pool sessions whilst on-duty
• To carry out any other duties requested by the Commercial Operations Manager or Duty Manager/Supervisor as appropriate
