Overview

A great place to live and work.

All kinds of schools, all kinds of opportunities

Medway is a unitary authority situated in the County of Kent, in an enviable location between London and mainland Europe. We have a rich heritage and, through on going regeneration, a great future. Our compact size and rich mix of schools gives the perfect opportunity for career development. There is a collective moral purpose and high level of commitment in Medway to work in partnership to achieve the highest possible standards in our schools and for all of our children and young people.

About Us

Nursery and Primary

There are just over 80 infant, junior and primary schools. Around half of Medway's schools admit children from three-years-old into the Foundation Stage and provide nursery education for three and four-year-olds. In addition, a further 120 independent nurseries and pre-schools are registered providers of free part-time nursery education for three and four-year-olds.

Secondary Schools

The local authority operates a selective admission system, comprising mainly of grammar and high schools. Grammar school admissions are based on an assessment of children during their final year at primary school. A number of schools have subject specialist status during sports, humanities, science and maths. We also have training schools that are leaders in staff development. A two-tier comprehensive admission system is in operation on the Hoo Peninsula.

Special schools and units

Medway has three special schools providing education for four to 19-year-olds, for pupils with severe, moderate and complex learning difficulties. A number of units are attached to mainstream schools, catering for a variety of special needs and promoting inclusion for all of Medway's pupils.

Extended schools

Extended Schools is a national agenda that helps schools to support families and provide vital resources. The result is a better educational environment for Medway's communities.
