About Us

MACS is an 11-18 co-educational community school located just outside the town of Mountain Ash in the lower Cynon Valley, ten miles from the Brecon Beacons National Park and twenty miles from the city of Cardiff. The school enjoys the benefit of modern buildings set in what were formerly the grounds and gardens of Duffryn Manor House. The number of pupils on roll is currently around 857, of which around 150 are in the sixth form. In recent years the school has experienced falling rolls, but numbers have now stabilised. The school serves the community of Mountain Ash and the neighbouring villages as far south as Abercynon. While much of the area suffers from economic disadvantage, the proportion of pupils claiming free school meals currently stands at around 32%. The development of the community dimension of schools has been a priority for Rhondda Cynon Taf in recent years and MACS has been a major innovator in terms of the strength and range of partnerships it has established with both the statutory and voluntary sectors. The most recent initiative has been the introduction of the YEPS programme, which gives the school access to a substantial budget and resources for the provision of high quality out of school hours activities both on the school site and within the community. The school is fortunate enough to have been able to develop a Lego Innovation Centre. We were the first school in Wales to have such a facility, the launch of which took place in May 2011. The school is ably supported by an active governing body. Governors are not only advocates for the school within its community, but also bring a wealth of both technical experience and local knowledge to the school's decision making process.
