An Education for the Future

We are delighted that you are potentially interested in a career at SGS Berkeley Green UTC.  We are a specialist school with a clear focus on the careers of the future. Let us tell you about what makes Berkeley Green unique.

We have two specialisms: engineering and digital technology, and a curriculum that enables students to blend academic and vocational education. STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) are at the heart of our curriculum because they unlock an enormous variety of study and career opportunities for young adults. We deliver our teaching of these subjects in unrivalled, state-of-the-art facilities.

The Core subjects of English and Maths run through all areas of the curriculum.  Literacy is a high priority for us; we strive to ensure that every student develops greater written and verbal fluency. Of course, we don’t neglect other aspects of the curriculum and students can pick subjects which complement their STEM choices, as well as enjoying a range of extra-curricular activities.

Employability is also woven through our culture and ethos. Students benefit from a very wide range of high quality opportunities to work with local employers and participate in industry-related activities. Every student participates in work experience. This helps us develop the ‘soft skills’ so necessary to future success, like teamwork, resilience and communication.

In short, we’re immensely proud of our school. There is so much more that we would love to tell you. Please take the time to explore our website and get in touch if you have any questions, or if you would like to look around the UTC. We are confident that you will be impressed.

About Us

SGS Berkeley Green UTC is one of about fifty University Technical Colleges nationally. UTCs are set up to help prepare young people for employment in the technical industries and their specialisms reflect the needs of significant employers in the local area. They are colleges because the environment is less like that of a school and more like a workplace, further or higher education institution. We also have a close relationship with The University of Gloucestershire which is one of our sponsors alongside SGS College and a range of local employers.

As with all UTCs, SGS Berkeley Green UTC’s curriculum has been developed in partnership with employers, who have taken an active role in the development of the UTC. Students follow the national curriculum enabling them to achieve the same number of GCSEs that they would in a school, but because of the longer school days they also have an additional forty percent of their time focused on undertaking specialist vocational education and projects led by employers in the areas of Engineering, Cyber Security and Digital Technologies. This enables students at a UTC to become more attractive to employers as they have practical, relevant skills as well as having the same excellent education and qualifications that they would get within a secondary school or sixth form.
